I have been discussing
branding yourself as it relates to campaigns on MySpace and other social
networks, and in the first article I discussed setting up your MySpace profile
to tell your story and to intrigue the reader to the point where they want to
know more about you. The desired outcome is that they eventually, if not
immediately, click through to your website. In this article I will discuss
setting up a site that will further your objectives in building an intelligent
relationship with them, which is, after all the most important outcome of the
approach I am describing.
Your Website
One of the most important
things to consider in setting up your site is this: you must
have your own domain, and it must be either your name or a part
of your name that is uniquely recognizable. In this day and age, it is so
inexpensive to buy a domain that there really is no excuse not to own
YourName.com or the like. The important part about
this is that it sets you apart as someone who is serious about online business
and is committed as well as established. The benefits of having a site hosted
privately with your own domain are actually numerous; it allows you complete
control over your content and in most cases gives you valuable tools for
analyzing your traffic. My site at www.BradParent.com is hosted with a
company called 1&1 Internet, who have given me ease of use for a very
reasonable price. I have bought and hosted several domains with them and now
have a Business Package which gives me all of the web space I will ever need and

The content of your home page
should not refer to your primary business, but should be a discussion of
your objectives and/or values, telling your story in a little more
depth than your MySpace profile. This is more or less a good place to discuss
your business philosophy or some other ideas that make you stand out from the
crowd. I suppose the real thing I'm driving at here is that this is a good place
to really show the things you have a passion for, without directly naming or
advertising your business. It's a good idea to refer to your business
indirectly, however, and provide a link or some other way for people to find out
exactly what that is. That way you haven't hit them over the head with it, but
you've gotten them interested in what you're all about and what is working for
you. Don't be afraid to brag about your successes a little, people want to
associate with those who are experiencing success.
It's also a good idea to
incorporate a lead capture page into your site with a set of, dare I say
it, autoresponder letters for follow up. This should be along the lines of
having someone be able to subscribe to your newsletter, where they can get
valuable information. If you don't have or don't care for autoresponders, I
really wouldn't blame you, but providing a little contact form so you can
capture information and follow up with them personally is really an even better
idea. Autoresponders can work well to warm up people who are half interested,
but only if you have some really carefully written
letters. It's really not worth it to try to use just any old advertising copy
for your letters, because people are so familiar with this approach that they
won't pay any attention to them. Rather, write your own letters, and make sure
you write them as though you are talking directly to your reader. You can
certainly discuss features and benefits of what you have to offer, after all,
that is the point, but don't make it sound like a canned "sales pitch" with a
lot of repetition. It's more important to look at your letters as a way of
contributing something of value to their life, in other words, you are
empowering them to take action with communication based on
THEIR needs and not your own. I prefer to have my capture form
on a separate page with a little discussion of what they will get, and to have a
kind of unobtrusive suggestion referring to that and linking to it on my home
page.
Probably the next best thing
you can do for your site beyond all of this is to provide as many other pages
with relevant content that you can or resources that
will attract people to do business with you; training and information resources
primarily. One reason is that search engine optimization depends a great deal on
relevance and what is known as keyword weight, in other words how well your
keywords relate to the topic of your content. Not only that, but everybody loves
to run across information that's going to help them upgrade what they are doing
on the web, especially content that will give them
Skills they don't already have or insider information
that they haven't seen before. One of the best examples I've run across of this
is some intelligent videos on someone's site teaching MySpace search techniques.
A simple how-to video made with a tool like Camtasia can really go a
long way towards showing someone what you know and can teach. As one of my
mentors always says, "True residual income on the Internet depends not
on how many people you can recruit, but how many
people you can train."
These are just a few
suggestions to get you thinking about how you could build YouName.com to draw
visitors even further into a relationship with you without advertising to them.
People like to do things of their own volition, and are attracted to those who
have something they are interested in. So if you take the approach I am
suggesting, you will begin to pique the interest of like-minded individuals, who
will be more likely to want to do business with you because you aren't pushing
something on them. People do business for one of two reasons, either you have a
solution for a problem they have (pain), or bacause they like you and
enjoy doing business with you (pleasure). Their desire to do business
with you is relative to the intensity of either of these two emotions, and to
capture them on both fronts is the most desirable thing, so you want to do what
you can to keep these emotions in mind when you create the content of your
site.
I have been running into some
interesting concepts regarding branding yourself when setting up campaigns on
MySpace and similar networks. I have decided to share what I have learned in the
hopes that it will help those struggling with Web 2.0 protocols and
methodologies.
Initial Setup
Suggestions and tips on setting up MySpace profiles abound, and the
variety to be found there attests to the unlimited nature of what you can do
when you engage the creative process. However, one of the most common pitfalls I
find out there is the urge to showcase your primary business on your profile, as
opposed to showcasing yourself. I find that the profiles I feel most comfortable
with and attracted to are those where the "Primary Business" is nowhere to be
found, but instead you will find a detailed description of the person's
background and attitudes. This is what you want to work towards. Create that
sense of comfort by telling your story, and leave the name of your business out
of the picture as much as possible. Once people are attracted to you, there will
be plenty of time to introduce them to your business, but in the model I am
proposing, it has no place in the first impression, or at least takes a back
seat to who you really are.
To
these ends, you want to lead with a bio of yourself, describing your background
and putting your best foot forward, but MOST IMPORTANTLY you want to tell people
a story of the frustrations and the problems you have encountered in your life's
journey, and how you have overcome them. Many people can relate to struggle and
frustration; we all have it. But they also want to be talking to someone who has
come out on top. You don't necessarily want to tell them of your solutions just
yet, but rather just that you have found them. This story needs to be
heartwarming to some degree, and starting from this angle gives the visitor a
little bit of curiosity and tension which they will want to resolve. The place
you will resolve this will be in your interaction with the now curious visitor,
either through your website of in personal communications. But you want them to
be curious what has worked for you in solving a problem they can relate
to.
Next, before they leave your page, you want to tell them who you want to
meet, and also who you don't want to meet. This will qualify your
visitors to some degree and save you some of the aggravation of dealing with the
type of person you're not interested in doing business
with.
A
nice-looking professional picture of yourself, and your contact information are
also essential, put the link to your site underneath your story, so they will be
drawn to it to find out more.
There are many different opinions and many different things you can do to
jazz your profile up and make it look attractive, and that's great too. But
ATTRACTIVE is the key word here, and not scary. You want to make it appealing to
the type of people you want to attract, so think about your target market first
and figure out what THEY like. Try to stay away form the kinds of things they
don't like. I find flashing banners distracting, for example, and I won't stay
long on a page that has them. Music can be nice as well, but it might qualify
people a little more than you want to, people's musical preferences vary widely
and are generally somewhat exclusive. Be very selctive as to the type of people
you accept as friends as well, for the purposes to this type of profile. You
want to only accept the type of people you are looking for, and not the ones who
would turn those people off, so be very careful about
this.
I
hope these suggestions will prove helpful to you. My next post will be about
your website and its part in this type of campaign, and then I'll delve a little
more into personal interactions and some of the "psychological chess" that goes
on in them.

I figured it was Val who invited you here, I think he's probably pretty impressed with what you're doing. I'm getting an education watching your videos. I am a relative newcomer to the Web 2.0 ideas and I am beginning to find that there are layers of protocol and etiquette that can make you or break you. We need more people like you who can help us to clarify and define where our boundaries lie in this highly sensitive and responsive environment. The thing I notice is that people are truly wearing their hearts on their sleeve, and that was unheard of in the old email driven environment. You can't go about like a bull in a china closet any more. Develop this line of thinking and I'm quite sure you will find the psychological basis for the Web 2.0 phenomenon. Leverage the power of this insight and combine it with the power of the following you have already developed, and you will touch many lives and lead many of your friends to great success. I don't have the charisma that you have going for you, but I would love to see you delve deeper into this subject matter and bring it to the masses. I believe you must have a great intuitive grasp of it, or you would not be where you are.
I thought I'd give those of you who have actually
been subscribing and reading my blog a little break from my Prosperity Cast
Networkads and talk about something a little different. I
have been communicating with Elizabeth Adams, who is planning to come in to the Prosperity Cast
Network, and she is doing it by working a program that meshes
well with ours but costs a good bit less. Although it doesn't provide the Black
Belt type of marketing training that Val Smyth does, it does show you how to
generate 200-300 free leads for your business every

taught to me by Karen Weir. Get a Blogfather blog, then go to
Feedburner.com and burn the feed
from the Blogfather. This will help you track subscribers.
Then create a headline animator in
Feedburner, get the code, and paste it into all of your sites, anywhere
you can use html. Also use that same Blogfather feed in all of your
Veretekk portals. That will link everything into that Blogfather feed, and
you can just put your articles into that and it will update all your sites
at the same time when you post a blog.
I would also keep putting them into
Apsense, though. You can use html in Blogfather, so it's just an extra
step to paste your blogs into there, and it will link everything you're
doing.
If you're already doing all that,
Maybe all of us that have those headline animators could exchange them and

25. New Podcast My father, Lee M. Parent, LCSW, and I have just released a new podcast! In it we discuss the socio-economic effects of Katrina two years after the disaster, as well as the nature of Crisis, and positive responses to crisis. We also go into some detail about our business as part of the Mentors in Motion Xooma Marketing team, and our flagship product, Xooma Worldwide's Xtreme X2O, and its health benefits. X2O is the ultimate vitamin water, a healthy alternative to sodas and today's latest craze, energy drinks, and it also is a potentailly lucrative business with very low startup costs.
26. Transparency These are some things that being a part of the Mentors in Motion team has brought me to realize, please forgive me if it sounds trite or preachy, but I'm beginning to see how true these things are: If we have anything to share at all, we must first be open about who we are so others may percieve what it is we might have to share. Those who miss this vital element in building a business relationship have really built no relationship at all, and so the ties wither and fade as time brings new priorities into the mix. To be of use to our customers and our company, we must show all of our cards, not just the ones we think they might want to see. The internet can be as personal or as impersonal as we like, and it is the impersonal aspects that rob us of the value we expect when we put our time into one-way relationships. I for one, sometimes worry that my openness with the group I'm with will lead others to see me as a prima donna type, however, I've spent more than enough time in the past hiding behind impersonal marketing methods, and it hasn't worked. I think this is what Val Smyth means when he talks about people who expect to join a program and make money doing nothing, making no contribution. We all work very hard on our businesses, but we must at times pause and ask ourselves if the relationships that we have built are being well served by our actions. If the answer is yes, then we can be sure that we have something that will stand the test of time.
27. Teamwork Our Mentors in Motion Xooma Marketing Tea, has been exploring using certain specific keywords in our RSS feeds in order to aid in our SEO efforts. If we all use the same keywords in our blogs, we can propel each others' sites to the top of the search engine rankings. We have previously placed our feeds in the websites we wanted to optimize and are busily creating content for our blogs that will attract more traffic to those sites, as they are more frequently updated, search engine spiders will crawl them more frequently. To quote Team Leader Karen Weir:
This was a real team effort, and our work is not yet done. We still have some more research to do on our keyword phrases, and of course, testing will be ongoing. As we know, teamwork truly makes the dream work!

Liquid vitamin was a popular choice as well. This is a tricky one since the audience it will attract is probably searching for a multi vitamin supplement. While we know that our x2o treated water is destined to become the "next" liquid vitamin, using this term may not bring the targeted traffic we are looking for... or will it?
Who is our target market for this product? Health conscious individuals who may be surfing looking for a vitamin supplement may NOT be actively seeking our product, but they may well be interested in it.
Our vitamin water is not a multi vitamin, but it is a mineral supplement and great source of coral calcium. Health conscious individuals are already aware of the importance of hydration, and increasing our intake of alkaline foods to offset the highly acidic diets. The understand the importance of providing the body with more alkaline to help our body maintain the appropriate pH balance.
When choosing keywords, it is important to consider your target market. it is wise to start with a broad market, and continuously test, then narrow the target market down. Those health conscious individuals already understand the role of pH balance in the body, but there is another market of people who require education on the pH in the human body and how the body compensates for highly acidic diets.
Next our research will focus on keywords descibing the business opportunity side of our product, a business that you too can join as a distributor, and make money from a home-based business built on a current, exploding trend. Daily Email Marketing to Free Leads We are so lucky to be part of a group that provides us with as many free leads to email as we can handle, especially when you look at the prices some people will pay for a list of leads. Making email marketing part of your daily routine is a simple way keep yourself working towards your goals on a daily basis. Networking is all about increasing the number of business contacts you have, and email marketing is a free and easy way to find new contacts, if you don't have them already.
